Welcome Back Friends & Family Night!

On Thursday September 17th, Genius Academy held its first education seminar of the year, “How to promote healthy study habits,” given by our very own Ms. Jennifer Lee, and guest speaker Sunny Zhang. The two discussed theory and educational research that discusses the importance of four areas in study skills: time management, self-discipline, effort, and motivation.  Ms. Zhang was able to spend time talking about the importance of setting goals for children, both short-term goals and long-term goals. She also reinforced the idea that parents must pay attention to a student’s social and emotional needs, emphasizing that parents should work with their children as opposed to become their task manager.

When it comes to self-discipline, students need to be able to regulate their own emotions, a task that parents can assist in by helping to monitor their children’s effort and giving them responsibility and consequences for their own actions. Ms. Lee discussed the importance of effort, and what the educational research says about promoting motivation in school. She talked about Shawn Achor’s studies in how happiness leads to success instead of success leading to happiness. By going over Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck’s research, she also promoted the idea of helping children develop a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset. Last of all, Ms. Lee emphasized the importance of acknowledging a child’s work to help motivate students to do well in school. Overall, the seminar was a great success, as several parents felt that the concrete examples and evidence based on research were extremely helpful for promoting their children’s overall development.
